Trapiche emeralds hail exclusively from the emerald mines of the Boyacá region in Colombia. They are named for their unique patterns, which resemble the spoked wheels of the traditional “trapiche” gears used locally to grind sugarcane. Extremely limited in supply, trapiche emeralds are perhaps the rarest of all “pattern” gemstones. Their six distinct spokes are caused by the presence of a black carbon-rich inclusion known as lutite. As the hexagonal emerald crystal grows, it pushes the lutite toward the center and then outward along six directions, following the natural symmetry of the crystal. A truly remarkable feat—crafted by the hands of Mother Nature herself.
