Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one colour: olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the colour of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish green.

Originally it was only found in the Tapazios Island in the Red Sea and mined exclusively for the Egyptian kings. This was fiercely guarded and stayed privy to the Egyptian king for around 3,500 years. Eventually rediscovered in 1905 after centuries of abandonment it was renamed John’s Island and then Zabargad. With its rich history it is known as the national gem of Egypt.

Peridot is one of only two gems that form in the molten rock of the upper mantle, rather than the Earth’s crust. While olivine is quite abundant, peridot is a rare find on the Earth’s surface due to the long way it has to travel from deep inside the Earth. Olivine is also found in meteorites where it is surrounded by pure iron.

Known as the stone of compassion, peridot is believed to bring good health, restful sleep, and peace to relationships by balancing emotions and mind.
