Viridine is a green variety of Andalusite in which manganese substitutes for aluminium. Most Andalusite contains relatively pure Al, whereas Andalusite with substantial Fe and Mn is called Viridine.

An example of intense green Viridine on a Feldspar-Quartz Muscovite matrix. An Interesting and uncommon specimen for the collector of peculiar specimens. Viridine is the rare Mn variety of Andalusite. Viridine crystals are generally rare, known from few localities worldwide. This material was found in Greece in the summer of 2014 and was an interesting novelty at the Munich 2015 show. Viridine from Thasos is hardly known to the mineral world and hardly any of this material from this locality is available on the market which makes it a rare specimen, google search and you will be surprised to see the very high prices for this material. Furthermore, no more is to be found and hasn't been since the original find which was a rare occurrence. Viridine crystallizes in the orthorhombic symmetry system and has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 in the Moss Scale and can be used for lapidary. Thasos Viridine is the finest for the variety worldwide. This is not so much of an aesthetic specimen, but a wonderful example of an extremely hard to find very rare material known in Greece only from Thasos island.
