Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by Maasai tribesmen in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, near Mount Kilimanjaro. The stones, initially mistaken for sapphires, were identified as a blue-violet variety of zoisite. Tiffany & Co., a prominent jewelry retailer, christened the gem "tanzanite" in 1968 to honor its country of origin and promote its sale, leading to its widespread recognition and demand
