⌘ Description ⌘

Curation

Curated by: Harshil Zaveri, Founder & CEO

Description: For centuries, the Mogok Stone Tract of Burma, otherwise known as modern-day Myanmar, has provided the world with its finest rubies. Burmese rubies are renowned for their clarity, silk inclusions that give them a soft glow, and, of course, their vibrant color - a combination of purplish-red body color and fiery red fluorescence, with the most coveted called "pigeon's blood." Today, with most of the alluvial deposits in the region depleted, Burmese rubies are among the most valuable and prestigious of all gemstones.

This 7.36-carat ruby is a perfect example of a top "pigeon's blood red" specimen from the region. This is the type of ruby that makes you think of tales of kings and queens and how ruby was considered the gem to top all gems.

Gemstone, Origin & Treatments

✦ Species: Natural Corundum

✦ Gemstone & Variety: Natural Ruby

✦ Geographic Origin: Mogok - Burma (Myanmar)

✦ Treatments: No Treatments (Unheated/Untreated)

Weight, Measurements & Shape

✦ Weight: 7.36 carats

✦ Measurements (L x W x H): 12.89 x 9.70 x 6.53 mm

✦ Type of Cutting: Faceted

✦ Shape: Oval

Color

✦ Intensity of Color: Deep

✦ Shade: Velvety Red

✦ Color Award: "Pigeon Blood Red"

✦ Description of Color Award: Macabre, as it sounds, "Pigeon Blood Red" refers to a color category reserved for the finest, high-caliber rubies that exhibit a vibrant and vivid crimson red color. The term is said to have originated in Burma, where locals call the most vivid rubies "ko-twe", meaning "pigeon's blood". It is said that a perfect ruby is the same color as the first two drops of blood from the nose of a freshly-killed pigeon.

Pigeon blood red is the most sought-after color in rubies, surpassed by no other. While these rubies are usually devoid of purplish/pinkish/orangish/brownish overtones, some stones may show a slight purple hue.

While Burma (Myanmar) - particularly the Mogok region - has historically produced the most legendary pigeon blood red rubies, the nomenclature is not exclusive to the country. Other localities that yield fine-quality pigeon blood red rubies include Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Vietnam.

✦ Gemologist’s Comments on Color: The color of this ruby is an attractive and highly desirable shade of "pigeon blood red" without being overly dark in appearance.

Transparency & Clarity

✦ Transparency: Transparent

✦ Clarity grade: Moderately Included

✦ Clarity description: Inclusions are moderately visible at eye view

✦ Gemologist’s Comments on Clarity: Due to their natural growth conditions and recovery methods, rubies from Burma (Myanmar) commonly have features such as growth tubes, fingerprint inclusions, rutile silk clouds, and other microscopic inclusions that may affect the transmission of light to a certain extent. For this reason, despite being fully transparent, Burmese rubies may not show luster & scintillation as prominently as rubies from other localities.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence is the visible light some gemstones emit when exposed to invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. We've described below the intensity and color of the gemstone's fluorescence under long-wave UV light (LWUV).

✦ Fluorescence Intensity: Very Strong

✦ Fluorescence Color: Red

Special Characteristics

✦ Large Size: The size of this gemstone is large compared to the commonly available sizes in this species/variety, making it rare and highly sought-after.

✦ Velvety Appearance: This gemstone exhibits an appearance that is classified as "velvety". Such an appearance results from very fine microscopic particles that scatter light, causing the coveted visual effect without negatively affecting the gem's transparency. Gemstones with a velvety appearance have little to no extinction, display a warm glow, and look very pleasing to the eye. Therefore, velvety appearance is considered a highly sought-after trait in gemstones. The most prominent examples of gemstones coveted for their velvety appearance are the legendary Kashmir sapphires.

✦ Superior Cutting: The cut grade of this gemstone is classified as "superior". It has been masterfully cut by our highly skilled gem cutters (lapidaries) to bring out its best qualities and diminish any perceived imperfections. This gemstone is symmetrical, well-proportioned, and has an excellent surface polish. Therefore, it displays the maximum dispersion, scintillation, and fire.

Admin edit: This stone is genuine and certified from Burma. Original: This stone is not from Burma, there is no fluorescent characteristics. In addition, there is a huge cloud on the stone that covers almost 1/6 of the stone.
