The chemical formula of amethyst is SiO2 (Silicon Oxide). Its color can vary from an intense purple to a light violet. This depends on the amount of iron concentration it contains, and when exposed to heat the stone loses its color and becomes yellow. In this case, oxidation occurs, transforming Fe2 + into Fe3 +. This process occurs even when the amethyst receives solar lighting for a long period.

Composed of asymmetrically arranged quartz sheets, the amethyst has a hardness level of 7 on the Mohs scale. It can be broken by strokes that form a wavy fracture due to the natural structure of the stone. Crystals always grow from a base and the color tends to be more intense at its tips.
