Discovered in 1967, it is prized for its vibrant colors, which are enhanced by heat treatment and depend on the viewing angle due to pleochroism. Tanzanite measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it brittle and requiring careful handling and cleaning.
