Moonstone is a translucent, opalescent variety of the feldspar group of minerals, prized for its unique adularescence, a soft, milky sheen that seems to float across the surface, caused by light scattering through its microscopic layers. It can be found in various colors, such as white, gray, green, peach, and yellow, with the most valuable types being transparent with a strong blue shimmer. Moonstone is often cut as a cabochon to showcase the adularescence and requires careful handling due to its relatively low hardness (6–6.5 on the Mohs scale).
