Ruby is a red variety of the mineral corundum, which is composed of aluminum oxide. Its red color is primarily due to the presence of chromium. Rubies are highly valued for their rich, vibrant color, hardness (second only to diamond), and rarity. The most prized rubies have a deep red color with a hint of blue, often referred to as “pigeon’s blood” red. Rubies have been cherished for centuries and are often used in fine jewelry. They are the birthstone for July and have significant cultural and historical importance in many societies. Major sources of rubies include Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique.
