Presenting an exceptional 18.85 carat rough crystal of diaspore from the celebrated new deposit in the Goshta District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, reported by GIA in 2020. This piece exhibits loupe‐clean clarity (VVS to loupe‐clean) and a remarkable colour behaviour — under daylight‐equivalent lighting it reveals a purplish‐pink hue, shifting under incandescent lighting to pink / orange‐pink tones.
Key Features:
• Origin: Goshta District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan (new deposit reported Feb 2020).
• Weight: 18.85 carats (rough crystal form)
• Clarity: Loupe‐clean, essentially flawless to the naked eye
• Colour & behaviour: In daylight‐equivalent light, a saturated purplish‐pink; under incandescent light a richer pink to orange‐pink tone. GIA notes slight colour shift (not as dramatic as typical turkish diaspore) but distinct and attractive.
• Mineral species: Diaspore (AlO(OH)), extremely rare gem‐quality from Afghanistan.
• Use: This specimen is ideal for an advanced collector, gem‐cutting into a high‐quality faceted stone, or as a museum‐worthy rough. Its size and clarity make it exceptionally rare in the Afghan material category.
Why it matters:
The GIA report highlights that this material shows a unique trace‐element profile (vanadium, chromium) and optical behaviour distinct from the Turkish “zultanite” material, making this Afghan find particularly collectible and scientifically significant.
Care & setting note:
Diaspore has good durability for jewellery use, but given the value, size and rarity of this rough, many buyers choose to facet it into a statement stone or archive it as a spectacular specimen.
