Serendibite is one of the rarest gemstones in the world, prized for its deep blue-green to nearly black coloration and exceptional scarcity. First discovered in Sri Lanka in 1902, the gem derives its name from Serendib, the ancient Arabic name for the island. Serendibite forms under rare geological conditions in calcium- and boron-rich metamorphic rocks, making gem-quality crystals extremely uncommon.
Besides Sri Lanka, small deposits have also been reported in Myanmar and Madagascar. Due to its extreme rarity and unique color, serendibite is highly prized by collectors and is considered one of the most exclusive gemstones ever discovered.
