Spinel is the magnesium/aluminium member of the larger spinel group of minerals. It has the formula MgAl 2O 4 in the cubic crystal system.
Its beautiful, vivid colors and very good clarity are entirely natural, so spinel is almost always untreated. In addition to fine color and clarity is spinel's rarity, which is even greater than that of ruby. Plus only a handful of stones are as durable as spinel, and it has very good hardness of 8.
