Welcome to Lunariagems!
It is indeed a pleasure to showcase this beautiful and very rare Colombian Muzo cat's eye emerald, this emerald is definitely a rarity, this gem exhibits the extraordinary cat's eye effect inside the stone, which makes it very rare and unusual, the color is a nice green, with a very good crystal, on the back of the crystal there are some carbon stripes which slightly cover the stone, but such inclusions don’t interfere with the display of the emerald’s chatoyancy which is remarkable and you can easily see it on sunlight, or incandescent light, this emerald is perfect for a pendant or ring on 18k yellow or white gold!

COLOMBIAN CAT’S EYE EMERALDS
They’re exceptionally rare treasures, known for their vivid green color and the unique light-reflecting "eye" (chatoyancy) caused by parallel inclusions, often found in Muzo/Coscuez rough, requiring cabochon cutting to reveal the effect, making them highly prized collectibles sought after by gem enthusiasts. These unique stones are far rarer than regular emeralds and often come from specific Colombian mines, showcasing the distinctive geological beauty of Colombian emeralds in a very special form.
Key Characteristics:
Rarity: Cat's-eye emeralds are significantly rarer than typical emeralds, making them highly valuable.
Chatoyancy: A distinct band of light moves across the stone's surface, created by dense, parallel, tube-like inclusions within the crystal.
Origin: They are documented from Colombia, particularly the Coscuez mine in the Muzo region, known for their unique trapiche rough material.
Appearance: They often have a bright green hue but are usually translucent to opaque, needing cabochon cuts (smooth, rounded tops) to best display the cat's-eye effect.
Processing: Like many Colombian emeralds, they often undergo standard clarity enhancement with cedarwood oil.
Why They're Special:
Collector's Item: Their extreme rarity and unique visual appeal make them highly desirable for collectors.
Unique Cuts: Emerald cutters now recognize the potential for this effect in rough material, leading to more specialized cutting to reveal the phenomenon.
For hundreds of years, the mines of Colombia have yielded many of the world’s finest emeralds. They were known to the Indian inhabitants prior to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors in the 1500s. After being introduced to emeralds in the spring of 1537 as a gift from the Boyacá Indians, over the following decades it was the Spanish who began to send them from what they called “New Grenada” back to Europe. Although emeralds had previously been known from Egypt and a small mining area in Austria (and perhaps from Central Asia), the material from Colombia was of much better quality. There are three main mining areas in the country – Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor – located in two mountain belts 50 to 80 kilometers northeast of Bogotá.
