Scheelite – Gemstone Description

Scheelite is a striking and rare mineral prized by collectors for its vibrant colors and dramatic glow under UV light. It is primarily composed of calcium tungstate (CaWO4) and is named after the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who discovered tungsten.

Appearance & Color

Scheelite is admired for its bright, vivid hues:

• Colorless to pale shades (less common)

Its high refractive index gives it a brilliant, almost diamond-like sparkle when cut properly.

Unique Feature – Fluorescence

One of Scheelite’s most famous properties is its intense blue-white fluorescence under shortwave UV light. This glow makes it easy to identify and highly prized by gem enthusiasts.

• Usually found with transparent to translucent clarity.

• Faceted scheelite is rare because the mineral is relatively soft (Mohs 4.5–5) and brittle, demanding skillful cutting.
