Alexandrite is a rare and valuable variety of the mineral chrysoberyl, famous for its dramatic color change from green in daylight to reddish-purple under incandescent light. It is a hard, durable gemstone with a Mohs hardness of 8.5. Its color-changing ability is due to trace amounts of chromium and it is sometimes described as "emerald by day, ruby by night".
