GIA Special Report:
This letter addresses the characteristics of the 3.39 carat musgravite described on GIA report number 2536056043.
Musgravite is a rare mineral that was first discovered in 1967 in the Musgrave Ranges of Southern Australia. Gem quality musgravite is primarily recovered from Australia but has been mined in Sri Lanka and Burma (Myanmar). In mineralogy, and per the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), the name musgravite is now considered to be a synonym for magnesiotaaffeite-6N'3S. This large, transparent stone exhibits a gray coloration and microscopic examination revealed short needles and particles.
Rough crystals that will cut large, transparent faceted stones are uncommon. Most finished stones are less than one carat and high quality, transparent stones over one carat are infrequently seen.
The combination of rarity and larger size makes this gray musgravite a notable gemstone.
Sincerely,
GIA Laboratory
