Sapphires can be found in almost every color except red, which is classified as a ruby. Sapphires that are not blue are called "fancy" sapphires. "Parti sapphires" have two or more colors.
Composition
Sapphires are made of aluminum oxide (α-Al2O3) and trace amounts of other elements, such as iron, titanium, cobalt, lead, chromium, vanadium, magnesium, boron, and silicon.
Hardness
Sapphires are a 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which means they are only scratched by diamond or boron nitride.
Origin
Natural sapphires form deep within the Earth over millions of years, usually in igneous or metamorphic rocks. Each natural sapphire crystal is unique in size, shape, and color
