Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.

An amazing example with a wonderful sparkle and luster from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria consisting of the highly sought after Cleiophane variety of Sphalerite crystals on sparkling quartz and matrix rock. Specimen is very interesting under magnification as there are numerous features to explore. The Cleiophane crystals turn translucent and Olive green when backilt. Although crystals are obvious to the naked eye, specimen requires magnification in order to fully enjoy the range of interesting structures. A wonderful specimen of a rare variety of Sphalerite that the Madan ore field is known for. Specimen will look great on display in your collection.
